The new action-thriller ‘Weapons’ has claimed the number one spot at the domestic box office over the long Labor Day holiday weekend.

The film earned an estimated $28.5 million across the four-day period, ending a summer movie season that saw several major blockbusters but concluded on a relatively quiet note.

Released by Paramount Pictures, ‘Weapons’ stars action veteran John Stone as a former agent pulled back in for one last mission.

The film’s performance was in line with industry expectations for a late-August release, drawing in its target audience without breaking any records. According to studio representatives, the result was a solid start for a film with a moderate production budget.

While ‘Weapons’ secured the top position, the weekend’s most talked-about performance came from a much older film. Universal’s 50th-anniversary re-release of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic, ‘Jaws,’ made a significant splash, landing in fourth place with an impressive $10.2 million.

The film, which was made available in premium formats including IMAX for the first time, proved that nostalgia remains a powerful draw for moviegoers. Information about the original film’s historic run can be found on its page on IMDb.

“The success of ‘Jaws’ shows there is a real appetite for seeing classic, well-made films on the big screen,” one box office analyst said. “

It’s not just about nostalgia; it’s about the cinematic experience, which is something that film has in abundance.”

The rest of the top five was filled out by holdovers from previous weeks. The superhero film ‘Quantum’ slid to second place, earning $15.3 million in its third week of release.

In third place was the animated family feature ‘Lost Woods,’ which brought in $12.1 million. The full list of weekend earnings is being tracked and updated by industry sources like Box Office Mojo.

Overall, the Labor Day box office was down from pre-pandemic years, a trend that has been common for the traditionally slow holiday weekend.

The success of ‘Weapons’ provided a needed win for a new release, but the strong performance of ‘Jaws’ may be the bigger takeaway for studios, highlighting the untapped potential of their extensive film libraries.

As Hollywood heads into the fall season, the weekend served as a quiet close to the summer and a reminder that sometimes, old classics can still compete with new releases.
