Nina Dobrev Reveals Pay Disparity Behind Vampire Diaries Exit

Edited by Kyle on September 10, 2025

In a candid interview on the “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard” podcast, actress Nina Dobrev revealed that her highly publicized departure from the popular TV series The Vampire Diaries in 2015 was significantly influenced by a substantial pay disparity between her and her male co-stars.

This marks the first time she has publicly acknowledged salary issues as a primary factor in her decision to leave the show.

For years, the official explanation for Dobrev’s departure after six seasons was her desire to explore diverse acting opportunities and break free from the demanding schedule of a network television show.

However, she revealed to Shepard that discovering she was earning significantly less than her co-leads, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, was a “disheartening” and pivotal factor in her decision not to renew her contract.

Dobrev stated on the podcast, “It was a reality check. I was the only cast member who played two main characters, and my screen time was often the highest. To find out that my compensation didn’t reflect that was a tough pill to swallow, especially in my early twenties.”

While exact salary figures from the show are not public, data from similar network television shows of that era suggest a common pattern. A 2022 Forbes report on Hollywood’s gender pay gap highlights that such disparities were widespread, particularly before the issue became a major public topic around 2016.

Industry insiders familiar with CW contracts from that time suggest that it was not uncommon for male leads to earn 20-30% more than their female counterparts, even when the woman was the central protagonist.

Dobrev’s admission places her alongside other prominent actresses who have spoken out about unequal pay. Jennifer Lawrence famously wrote about being paid less than her male co-stars for the film American Hustle, and Patricia Arquette used her 2015 Oscar acceptance speech to call for wage equality.

Dobrev’s story is significant as it involves a highly successful television series where her character, Elena Gilbert, was the undisputed narrative anchor.

The fan reaction online has been swift and largely supportive of Dobrev. Many longtime viewers of The Vampire Diaries expressed shock and disappointment on social media, noting the irony of a female-led story having such an imbalance behind the scenes.

Representatives for Warner Bros. Television and The CW, the studio and network behind the series, have so far declined to comment on the matter, citing policies against discussing confidential contract details from past productions.

Dobrev’s comments, however, have reopened the conversation and serve as a reminder of an industry standard that many are still fighting to change.
